Advice

Preparation Before Treatment

  • Avoid alcohol and overuse of tea/coffee
  • Remove contact lenses
  • Eat sparingly before massage
  • Avoid hair styling products and where possible the use of heavy make up
  • Wear suitable underwear as an element of body reading may be required (viewing the body to ascertain where tilts, rotations, bends or shifts appear)

After Care Advice

  • Replace or reduce tea/coffee intake with water, fruit juice/veg juice and herbal tea
  • Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours
  • Gentle exercise can be taken rather than stimulating, vigorous sports following treatment
  • Indulge in a bath or shower, which aids relaxation of the muscles and the mind
  • Take time to relax in peaceful surroundings to be quiet within yourself
  • Do not eat a large, heavy meal straight away as this could cause nausea. Eat sparingly to allow the body to use its energy on cleansing and healing rather than digestion

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

TMJ

Massage and myofascial release can help your symptoms and increase range of motion within the joint. It does this by adressing and releasing any restrictions in the fascia and musculature of the upper back, neck, head and face in particular┬áthe ones which control jaw movement. Working intraorally is also part of the treatment, which is very gentle but very effective in it’s release of tension within chewing muscles.

How do you know you have it in the first place?

Having a diagnosis from your GP or Dentist is one of the first steps then having treatment from a qualified massage therapist who has specific training and experience treating TMJ symptoms will undoubtedly help.

Common symptoms of jaw problems include;

  • Bruxism (grinding of teeth)

  • Trismus (difficuly opening mouth)

  • Long term (chronic) pain in neck, face, shoulders or upper back
  • Tinnitus
  • Sensitive to light and/or noise
